REMAIN NANTUCKET
FOOD INSECURITY REPORT 2022

Remain is a community impact Foundation with a specific interest in food systems.
summary
This research created a baseline understanding of food insecurity on Nantucket through the lens of individuals in programs and the organizations that serve them.
CHALLENGE
Remain wanted to better understand why enrollment in food security programs on the island remained low, even when the need was clearly there. We partnered with them to lead a research effort aimed at identifying the barriers to enrollment, uncovering the lived experiences of food insecure individuals, and setting the stage for better outreach, systems, and services.
The goal: lay the groundwork for more dignified, accessible support and a stronger, more connected food security network on Nantucket.
approach
We conducted over 20 in-depth interviews. We focused primarily on referral partners (those working closest with individuals in need) and also spoke with food security programs and food-insecure residents themselves.
CONCLUSIONS
Our research surfaced insights on what individuals actually want from programs (fresh, healthy food and a sense of dignity), and what’s standing in their way: shame, limited awareness, logistical hurdles, and a perception that programs aren’t designed for people like them. Many simply didn’t know what was available, or felt judged or uncomfortable asking for help. At the same time, referral partners lacked systems to track referrals, share information, or coordinate across programs.
Our findings led to a clear set of recommendations and design opportunities—from digitized intake systems and better communication infrastructure to the creation of programs like medically tailored meals. But more broadly, we highlighted the importance of shifting the experience of food assistance from one of stigma to one of community, health, and empowerment. People want to feel seen, respected, and supported – not processed. That starts with systems designed for transparency, flexibility, and humanity.
This report marked a turning point for food systems work on Nantucket. It revealed real potential for improving lives through smart design, strategic coordination, and program innovation. While there’s still work ahead, the community now has shared the insight, language, and momentum to drive forward. With Remain’s leadership, Nantucket is perched at the top of the hill, ready to roll into a future where food access is equitable, empowering, and built for everyone.
